PROJECT CONTEXT

Chaouen is a symmetrical 3v3 Capture The Flag map designed for Unreal Tournament 3.

Chaouen was crafted during my game design studies at Bellecour École, using UDK (UE 3)

DESIGN INTENTIONS

The main intention for Chaouen was to entice players to take more risks than usual, and to be greatly rewarded if they did so. Naturally, this intent express itself through the flag rooms (described later).

Aesthetically, I was quite inspired by Islamic architecture, as well as small 'hill towns' common along the Mediterranean sea, because of their spatial complexity. The main inspirations were the city of Chefchaouen in Morroco and the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul.

STRUCTURE

Chaouen is a small symmetrical, open and vertical map.

It is built along an axis, on which we can find, at the extremities the spawning positions, and a bit further, the flags. At the center, depending on which level you are, you'll access either the rocket launcher, or a huge health pack.

The tall, central building, is very open and provide paths to the main key locations of the map (both flags, rocket launcher, mega health). It can be accessed from the ground level, or from the flag room through jump pads, or rocket jumps.

Inside the central building, the space is narrower, but still open, thanks to high ceiling similar to a riad court. The lower part of the building, is less open, creating long sight of lines, useful for long range fight.

FLAG ROOM

As mentioned earlier, the flag room has been designed to encourage risky plays.

In order to do so, the three access to the flag are very different:

From the court - The flag (first floor) can be accessed from the court (ground floor) though 180° stairs, which advantage the defense.

From the side corridor - A side corridor, which goes from the bottom of the central building to the flag room is another option. Quite narrow, offering long lines of sight to the court and central building, thanks to windows, this access is the safest but can take a lot of time.

From the central building - Jumping from the central building (second floor) to the terrace gives a direct, and fast, access to the flag. The thing is, the jump really expose players, because of how open the area is. High risk, big reward.

Once players get the flag, they will use one of these routes, backward.
